The questions we hear most from shippers moving cargo through the UAE. For anything rule- or rate-specific, we link straight to the relevant government authority.
What documents do I need to clear customs in the UAE?
Most shipments need a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin and an HS code declaration. Certain goods also need an import permit. Our brokers confirm the exact list for your shipment before it arrives.
How is import duty calculated in the UAE?
The UAE applies the GCC common external tariff, generally 5% of the CIF value for most goods, with higher rates for products like alcohol and tobacco and exemptions for some categories.
A Harmonized System code classifies your goods and determines the duty rate and any restrictions that apply. Misclassifying a shipment is one of the most common causes of delay at UAE customs.
Are there goods banned or restricted from import into the UAE?
Yes. Categories such as narcotics, counterfeit goods and certain firearms are prohibited, and others need special permits.
With complete, accurate documentation, most shipments clear within 24 to 72 hours. Missing paperwork or an inspection can add time, which is why we prepare documents before the cargo arrives.
What is the difference between FCL and LCL shipping?
FCL (full container load) books an entire container for one shipper. LCL (less than container load) consolidates smaller shipments from multiple shippers into one container, usually at lower cost for lighter loads.
Do I need to pay VAT on imports into the UAE?
Most imports are subject to 5% VAT, collected at the point of import alongside customs duty.
Can Slar Cargo clear shipments for both free zone and mainland companies?
Yes. We handle clearance into UAE free zones and the mainland, including transfers between the two, and structure the paperwork for each accordingly.
What happens if my cargo is held at customs?
Our brokers work directly with the authorities to resolve the hold, whether it is a missing document, a classification query or an inspection, and keep you updated until it releases.
Do you handle temporary import or re-export shipments?
Yes, including shipments for exhibitions, projects and re-export, which follow a different customs procedure to permanent imports.
How do I get a shipping quote from Slar Cargo?
Share your commodity, ports and equipment on our quote page, and our team replies with routing, transit and a tariff, usually within one working day.
